Color Coordination Tips

"How do I create color flow?" This is a popular question, one we at Snyder Bros. Painting are asked frequently.

Whether in the setting of your home or place of business, colors and their specific placement can make us feel either comfortable, or, unfortunately, disconnected.

People commonly have the experience of walking into a space, sensing that something is not quite right, but not knowing exactly why. Chances are, color has something to do with it. In the same way a new, color coordinated outfit makes a person feel enlivened and energized, well-coordinated colors will vitalize a home or place of business.

We see that the colors surrounding us influence our moods and perceptions in powerful ways, so, how can color flow be arranged to achieve a harmonious, tranquil atmosphere?

The key is found in choosing a balanced color scheme, seamlessly connecting one space to the next.

To get started, you can apply these four principles of color flow:

  • Use lighter and darker shades of the same color throughout your home. Consider how you'd like to see these colors transition from room to room. A fan deck is an indispensable tool for helping you choose shades.

  • Create continuity by selecting hues with similar undertones. If you love reds with blue undertones, look for other colors with blue undertones.

  • Look to existing furnishings for color inspiration. Pick up colors from fabrics, artwork, or a favorite accessory and use them in different rooms throughout your home.

  • Choose between three and five favorite colors, and then alternate the primary, secondary, and accent colors for each room. For example, perhaps the main wall color in one room becomes the ceiling color in another room, and an accent color in another. You can also use wall stencils, pillows, lampshades, or window treatments to carry these colors from room to room. Select one or two colors to be shared by all rooms.
